A Modern Day Cowboy

by Jim Bell ©

Let me tell you the story of a modern day cowboy
James "Hoot" Gibson and Eye Reckon his steed.
His dream was to ride from Bandera, Texas
All the way up to the Calgary Stampede.

With Mark and Kevin and Mary he rode out
With eight mules and horses January 0 four
On the Goodnight Loving Trail they rode tall in the saddle.
They knew they could make it and they knew they'd be sore.

Horses and wagons were the only way to travel
In the old days and that's what they were going to do.
From Texas, New Mexico, and on to Colorado,
They sure would be weary before they were through.

Through blizzards and dust storms, rain storms and snow storms
They toughed it out and rode slowly along
Sleeping under the stars when nature would let them
And sitting 'round campfires with whiskey and song.

This is the story of a modern day cowboy,
James "Hoot" Gibson and Eye Reckon his steed,
Whose dream was to ride from Bandera, Texas
All the way up to the Calgary Stampede.

On to Wyoming and then through Montana,
Five months later to the border they came.
The Eye Reckon Freedom Ride was going to make it
James "Hoot" Gibson was now gaining fame.

He said, "The Ride isn't over, we still have to travel
Many more miles on the Old Cowboy Trail."
So on they went through southern Alberts.
They got there on time.  They had the horse by the tail.

The dream of Hoot Gibson, our modern day cowboy
Was nearly complete and it just goes to show,
If you stick to your guns and have the guts just to do it,
Your dreams can come true at the Big Rodeo.

The day of the parade for the Stampede in Alberta,
Hoot walked along just as proud as could be.
He led ol' Eye Reckon who carried him to get there
And that made him kind of a hero to me.

This is the legend of a modern day hero,
James "Hoot" Gibson and Eye Reckon his steed.
Whose dream was to ride from Bandera, Texas
All the way up to the Calgary Stampede.
