I Specialize In Mules
by Mike Newman © with James E. "Hoot" Gibson
I've been
shoeing horses
Going on twenty years
And I've kept these barn doors open
Through hard times and tears.
I won't turn down horses
No matter how mean or cruel
But like the sign says on my door
I don't shoe no old mules.
Those mules are full of mischief
Their heads are hard as stone.
They'll snarl and bite and kick you
And break your tender bones.
So listen to me, my friend,
For what I say is true.
Like the sign says on my door,
I don't shoe no mules.
I can still see him walking
Down that old dusty road.
Leading that broke down mule
It looked like such a load.
His clothes were dirty and torn
His eyes were teared and sad
And I could tell before he spoke
That mule was all he had.
He walked right up to me
And said, "Mister, it's bad.
I lost my mom two years ago
Last week I lost my dad.
I really don't want to sell this mule
But today she's going cheap.
'Cause we've run out of food
And little sister's got to eat."
His words went right through me
And tears filled my eyes.
So I said, "I'll buy that mule of yours
And I'll pay top price.
Then we'll hitch that wagon
And go to your farm
And bring little sister
To a place that's safe and warm."
Now it's two years later
And my life is filled with joy
'Cause of one little girl called "Sister"
And one brave little boy.
So happiness can even happen
To one stubborn old fool
That's why I changed my sign to read.
"I SPECIALIZE IN MULES".
